Inlay – Intarsio (non Pietre Dure)

Decorative inlay surfaces use a technique whereby different materials, often contrasting, are set into depressions in the substrate of the field material and then often ground flat.

The technique of inlay has been applied to wood, including traditions related to marquetry and intarsia, and to stone, marble and metal. De Ferranti can inlay into most substrates, and is able to combine mother of pearl, bone and horn, metal, wood, glass, marble, stone and semi-precious and precious materials.

Inlay is compelling because pattern is created through material itself rather than applied decoration. Historically, intarsia developed the simple act of insertion into a highly sophisticated pictorial language, including perspectival interiors in Renaissance Italy. In contemporary interiors, the same logic can produce a fine line of brass in dark stone, a shell or ceramic insert, a semi-precious accent, or a complete patterned panel.

Planning Mixed-Material Inlay

Material combinations should be reviewed as complete assemblies. Colour, reflectivity, joint width, pattern repeat, edge treatment and the relationship between field and inserted material can all change how an inlaid surface reads. Samples are particularly useful where polished stone, shell, metal or glass respond differently to daylight and artificial light. Confirm the intended application, substrate, finish and maintenance requirements before specification.
