Fleur de Lys Inlaid Monochrome Repeat Hexagonal Tiles

This monochrome fleur de lys tile uses a two-motif repeating hexagonal module, with Black Marble carefully inlaid into an old white marble field. Each tile is hand cut, with the dark fleur de lys forms shaped and seated into the pale stone before the surface is ground and rubbed by hand.

That hand finishing creates gentle surface undulations which become particularly apparent in reflected light. The design is shown in black and old white marble, while the established product can also be produced in other stone combinations. Its polished finish sharpens the heraldic silhouette without removing the slight irregularities that give hand-worked stone its character.

Monochrome Fleur de Lys Tile in Hand-Cut Marble

Two related fleur de lys motifs alternate across the hexagonal grid. One is narrow and upright, the other broader and more rounded. Repetition prevents either emblem from dominating, so the overall field reads as a disciplined heraldic pavement rather than a sequence of isolated badges. The hexagon also removes a simple horizontal or vertical reading, encouraging the motifs to lock together across the surface.

The polychrome Fleur de Lys hexagonal tiles use the same family of heraldic forms in a warmer palette. The Naïve Vine Opus Sectile with Inlay Panel offers a freer stone-marquetry comparison, while De Ferranti’s Medieval Heraldic & Bestiary Tiles explore related emblematic language in ceramic.

Setting Out the Hexagonal Repeat

Dry lay the monochrome fleur de lys tile before fixing so the two motifs alternate consistently and perimeter cuts remain balanced. The hand-ground surface should be viewed under the intended lighting, particularly where grazing illumination may emphasise subtle undulation. The live specification lists polished finish and supports a broad range of interior uses, with warm-climate exterior and swimming-pool applications also recorded. Confirm the final substrate, sealing, joint treatment and application requirements for the project.
