Handmade Glazed Ceramic Tiles by One of Portugal's Most Distinctive Ceramic Artists
The Ceramic Tiles by Alvaro Afonso Atelier collection celebrates the artistry, individuality and material richness of handmade Portuguese ceramics. Created through a collaboration between De Ferranti and AAA - Alvaro Afonso Atelier, the collection brings together a carefully curated palette of hand-glazed ceramic tiles that honour traditional craftsmanship while embracing a contemporary design sensibility.
Working from his atelier in Portugal, Alvaro Afonso creates ceramics that are deeply rooted in the handmade tradition. Each tile is individually glazed and kiln-fired, resulting in subtle variations of colour, texture and surface movement that give every installation a unique character. Rather than striving for industrial uniformity, these ceramics celebrate the beauty of irregularity, where glaze pools, edge variations and tonal shifts become part of the finished design.
The collection includes three core colour families: The Blues, The Greens and The Whites. Each family has been developed to offer both individual colour specification and more expressive tonal blending. The blue palette moves through sky, Delft, patina, lagoon and navy tones. The green palette explores moss, sage, verdure, olive and citron.
The white palette includes five standalone white glazes alongside two curated white mixes and blends, allowing for softer, mineral-led surfaces with subtle variation, warmth and texture.
Unlike many ceramic collections that are limited by available stock colours, the Alvaro Afonso Atelier collection is built around flexibility. De Ferranti maintains substantial stocks of greenware - ceramic tiles that have been formed, dried and prepared for firing but have not yet received their final glaze. By holding inventory in this state rather than as finished glazed products, we are able to respond quickly to projects of different sizes while retaining exceptional creative freedom.
This approach offers significant advantages for architects, interior designers and private clients. Colours can be produced to order, blends can be adjusted to suit a particular scheme, and larger quantities can often be supplied without the constraints typically associated with handcrafted ceramics. It allows the collection to remain both highly artisanal and commercially practical, combining the beauty of handmade production with a responsiveness that is rarely found in bespoke ceramic work.
Alongside the standalone colours, specially curated mixed palettes have been developed to create surfaces rich in movement and variation. Rather than relying on strong colour contrast, these blends use closely related tones to achieve a painterly effect across walls and, where technically suitable, floors and other surface features. The result is a more organic and visually engaging surface that changes subtly with light, perspective and scale.
The Blues Mix combines closely related blue glazes to create atmospheric surfaces full of depth, movement and coastal richness.
The Greens Mix brings together botanical, olive and citron tones for a layered surface inspired by gardens, woodland and Mediterranean landscapes.
The Whites offer a quieter register, with five individual white glazes and two mixes designed for chalky, bone-like, mineral and softly variegated interiors.
Inspired by Portugal's rich ceramic heritage, Atlantic light and the enduring appeal of handmade materials, the collection can be considered for traditional and contemporary interiors. The tiles bring handcrafted character to bathrooms, kitchens, garden rooms, entrance halls, stair risers, pool rooms and heritage-led interiors, subject to confirmation of the selected format, finish and installation requirements.
The collaboration between De Ferranti and AAA - Alvaro Afonso Atelier reflects a shared belief that materials should possess soul, individuality and permanence. The result is a collection of ceramics that feels timeless rather than fashionable, designed to age gracefully and become more expressive through use.
Whether specified as a single colour, a tonal blend or a bespoke composition, these handmade glazed ceramics offer architects, interior designers and private clients an opportunity to create surfaces that are expressive, tactile and unmistakably human.
Over time, new colours, mixes and textures will be added into this eclectic and evergrowing collection.
With a strong emphasis on swimming pools and wet areas, the collaboration between De Ferranti and Alvaro Afonso will in the near future include a range of custom pieces, such as internal and external angles, step-treads (with anti-slip grooves), gullies and drains.
It is worth noting for now that the Alvaro Afonso Atelier also makes terracotta floors for interiors and exteriors, including swimming pool surrounds.
Specifying Handmade Portuguese Ceramics
Handmade Portuguese ceramics should be assessed through physical samples and, for larger schemes, a representative batch mock-up. Small differences in facial dimension, edge profile, glaze depth and tone are part of the collection's character. Layouts and grout joints should therefore respond to the supplied material rather than being based on conventions used for rectified industrial tiles.
For wet areas, the ceramic finish should form part of a complete installation system incorporating an appropriate substrate, waterproofing, adhesive and grout. Floor, commercial, exterior, pool and other technically demanding applications should be confirmed with De Ferranti for the selected tile, glaze and format before final specification.

Colour, Format and Related Ceramic Surfaces
Individual colours provide a controlled tonal field, while the curated mixes introduce more pronounced movement across a larger surface. Brick formats can establish horizontal rhythm, articulate curved walls or bring additional proportion to splashbacks and feature areas. Reactive and textured glazes offer a stronger material statement for projects in which glaze variation is intended to become a principal design element.
Colours and blends should be reviewed under the lighting conditions expected within the completed interior. Mixing tiles from the supplied batch before installation helps distribute glaze variation naturally and avoids unintended concentrations of lighter or darker pieces.
