From the 4th Century BC, mosaics were used throughout the ancient world to decorate domestic walls and floors. As the art flourished through into the Christian era, a dazzling variety of different techniques, from Cosmati and Opus Sectile to Pietre Dure, began to develop under the wealthy patronage of Rome and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

De Ferranti offers access both to the rarified world of traditional mosaic studios and to contemporary craftsmen who have brought this ancient art firmly into the modern day.

Mosaics Across Materials and Traditions

Mosaics are defined by the assembly of individual tesserae or cut elements into a larger field, image or pattern. Within De Ferranti, that principle ranges from reclaimed stone and marble to hand-cut glass, metal, micromosaic and semi-precious materials. The collection includes historically rooted disciplines as well as contemporary interpretations, allowing designers to compare scale, surface, colour and method rather than treating mosaic as a single decorative language.

The wider selection includes Antique Stone Mosaics, where reclaimed floors are re-cut into smaller formats with their patina intact, alongside the sacred geometry of Cosmati and the closely fitted coloured-stone tradition of Pietre Dure. Across the parent collection, the live range currently brings together nine specialist mosaic groups and 232 products.

Pattern, Scale and Project Specification

For specification, the size and shape of the tesserae, surface finish, grout colour, sheet or panel format, pattern repeat and relationship to adjoining materials should be considered together. Natural stone and handmade components can vary in tone and texture, while reflective glass, metal and precious materials respond differently to changing light. Samples, layout drawings and project-specific technical review are particularly useful where mosaics form borders, large fields or detailed pictorial work.
