Micro Mosaics

Micro mosaics are a highly specialist form of mosaic, using minute components to craft complex and highly detailed images. Their delicate technique is closely related in spirit to marquetry, where small elements are assembled to build colour, line and pictorial depth. The ancestry of this work reaches back to the minute-tessera mosaics of antiquity, while the miniature Roman micromosaic tradition developed further in the eighteenth century around the Vatican workshops and makers including Giacomo Raffaelli. Traditionally, micromosaics were used for small objects such as boxes, jewellery, devotional pieces and table ornaments. At a larger project scale, the same control of detail can create focal panels, borders and pictorial inserts, or combine with other mosaic disciplines to provide areas of exceptional definition.

The defining quality of micro mosaics is scale. Very small tesserae allow an artisan to model outlines, shading and movement with a precision that larger mosaic units cannot easily achieve. Ancient opus vermiculatum offers an important precedent: tesserae follow contours in close, curving courses, helping figures and motifs read with a painterly character.
