Embossed & Repoussé Relief Work in Metal
Embossed work, or Repoussage, is a form of repoussé metalwork in which thin metal is hammered or pressed from the reverse side to produce designs in relief. The limitless potential of this technique is well illustrated by the fact that both the Statue of Liberty and Classical Greek armour were produced using repousse work.

Repoussé belongs to a long tradition of shaping sheet metal through controlled displacement rather than cutting the design from the surface. Historic examples range from armour to decorative objects, and relief may be refined from the front through chasing or engraving to sharpen contours.
