Embossed & Repoussé Relief Work in Metal

Embossed & Repoussé Relief Work in Metal

Embossed work, or Repoussage, is a form of repoussé metalwork in which thin metal is hammered or pressed from the reverse side to produce designs in relief. The limitless potential of this technique is well illustrated by the fact that both the Statue of Liberty and Classical Greek armour were produced using repousse work.

Today, working to special commission, De Ferranti applies it to producing raised relief elements for doors, coffered ceilings, mirror surrounds and a wide range of decorative panels for cabinetry. Advancing the concept still further, De Ferranti also combines repousse metal with stone to produce unique tiles and borders.

Repoussé Metalwork and the Language of Relief

Repoussé belongs to a long tradition of shaping sheet metal through controlled displacement rather than cutting the design from the surface. Historic examples range from armour to decorative objects, and relief may be refined from the front through chasing or engraving to sharpen contours. In interiors, raised ornament catches light, recesses deepen into shadow, and patination can strengthen the reading of pattern.

De Ferranti's collection moves between figurative panels, arabesque ornament and geometric metal tiles. The Metal Floor & Wall Tiles from the Alchemy Collection extends metal into tiled surfaces, while Metal Surfaces with Texture explores worked, patinated and relief finishes. Architectural Elements in Metal provides a route into commission-led features, and Inlay - Intarsio (non Pietre Dure) connects with the collection's use of metal alongside contrasting materials.

Specifying Embossed and Repoussé Metal Surfaces

When specifying repoussé metalwork, relief should be considered in relation to viewing angle and lighting. Pattern scale, joint lines, adjacent finishes, patina and the relationship between metal and surrounding stone or timber all affect how a composition reads. Samples are useful where several metals, finishes or materials meet, and larger panels or repeated tiles benefit from early layout review.
