Vellum – Oxblood Brown Patina Tile

An oxblood vellum tile with a deep red-brown field, smoky ink-dark blooms and the soft translucency of coloured parchment. Burnished brown-red tones move into near-black clouding across the surface, creating an aged patina that feels closer to natural material variation than a printed pattern. The finish remains low-sheen rather than glossy.

Vellum, also referred to as parchment, is usually made from goat and calf skin and has been used for more than 1,500 years in maps, manuscripts, bookbinding and writing surfaces. Its preparation differs from leather tanning: the skin is cleaned, stretched, scraped and dried under tension, retaining natural markings and subtle tonal changes.

Working and colouring parchment requires considerable skill. In the 1920s, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques Adnet and Paul Dupré-Lafon used vellum with oak, bronze, shagreen and other specialist materials. Aldo Tura later became particularly associated with coloured goatskin and parchment furniture in Italy.

Oxblood Vellum Tile and Smoky Patina

The Oxblood Patina is worked over a burnished red-brown base so that darker clouds appear to drift through the colour. Compared with the paler Vellum – Honey Wash Tile, it has a more concentrated, nocturnal character. The wider Skins & Hides – Tanned Leathers collection provides a useful comparison with surfaces whose texture comes from grain or scale rather than parchment clouding.

Colour Review and Project Detailing

The oxblood vellum tile is available in tile format, with sizes and mounting options on request. Suitable project directions include furniture cladding, cabinet doors, wall panels, bar fronts, drawer fronts and decorative inlay sections, subject to the exact application. Samples should be reviewed for the balance of red-brown, black clouding, sheen and natural markings, particularly where several tiles meet across a larger panel.
