Vellum, also referred to as parchment, is usually made from goat and calf skin. Its use extends back more than 1,500 years through maps, manuscripts, bookbinding and writing surfaces. Rather than being tanned like leather, the skin is cleaned, stretched, scraped and dried under tension, a process that helps create the smooth, translucent character valued in interiors.

Colouring and working the material requires experience because prepared parchment can be dry and drum-like. In the 1920s, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques Adnet and Paul Dupré-Lafon used parchment with materials including oak, bronze and shagreen.
