Vellum – Honey Wash Tile

A honey vellum tile with a sunlit, warm wash and the soft translucency associated with true parchment. Creamy tones move into ochre-gold staining through soft-edged transitions that resemble watercolour on aged paper. The low-sheen surface catches light gently, while natural mottling and skin markings keep each piece visually individual.

Vellum, also referred to as parchment, is usually made from goat and calf skin. Its use extends back more than 1,500 years through maps, manuscripts, bookbinding and writing surfaces. Rather than being tanned like leather, the skin is cleaned, stretched, scraped and dried under tension, a process that helps create the smooth, translucent character valued in interiors.

Colouring and working the material requires experience because prepared parchment can be dry and drum-like. In the 1920s, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques Adnet and Paul Dupré-Lafon used parchment with materials including oak, bronze and shagreen. Italian designer Aldo Tura later became known for coloured goatskin and parchment furniture.

Honey Vellum Tile and Parchment Character

The Honey Wash finish keeps the material light and luminous rather than glossy. Its warm staining gives a softer alternative to the deeper Vellum – Oxblood Brown Patina Tile. For wider historical context, De Ferranti’s Jean-Michel Frank and the Art of Rare Surfaces shows how parchment could give restrained furniture exceptional surface presence.

Samples, Light and Installation Planning

The honey vellum tile is available in tile format, with sizes and mounting options on request. It can be considered for furniture cladding, cabinet doors, wall panels, bar fronts, drawer fronts and decorative inlay sections, subject to the exact application. Samples should be reviewed under project lighting for colour, sheen and natural variation. Designers comparing other skin textures can also explore Shagreen & Fish Skins.
