Scagliola / Stucco Marble

Scagliola stucco marble is a complex decorative art form in which pigmented plaster is worked to imitate rare stone or built up as inlay to create patterned surfaces, pictures and ornamental fields. Closely related in visual effect to pietra dura, it remains a distinct craft with its own materials and methods. Historical sources describe scagliola as a gypsum based composition coloured with pigments, prepared in different ways, then polished to achieve the depth and sheen associated with marble and hardstone.

The History and Craft of Scagliola Stucco Marble

The technique was known in ancient Rome and revived in sixteenth century Italy before becoming an important feature of Baroque decorative workshops in the seventeenth century. It was used for panels, tabletops and richly patterned surfaces, with the capacity to imitate stones such as breccias, Giallo Antico, lapis and malachite. This made scagliola a compelling companion to Pietre Dure and to the rare stones in De Ferranti's Marble & Onyx Collection.

From Columns to Decorative Panels

Scagliola later became prominent in British country house interiors. Robert Adam and other designers used it for columns, chimneypieces and classical details, taking advantage of its ability to evoke rare marble at architectural scale. For contemporary projects, the same medium can move between large surfaces and closely observed decorative work. Because scagliola is made rather than quarried, colour, veining, pattern scale and the relationship between field and inlay can be developed around the commission. Samples are particularly useful for reviewing tone, polish and the intended reference to marble or semi-precious stone. Final suitability depends on the element, substrate, finish, level of traffic and installation method, so dimensions and technical requirements should be reviewed before manufacture.
