This Alexander the Great mosaic interprets the celebrated Battle of Issus image, showing the head of Alexander from the House of the Faun at Pompeii. The ancient mosaic represents the battle of 333 BC between Alexander and Darius III of Persia and is now conserved at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The original Alexander Mosaic is one of the most ambitious surviving Roman mosaics and is renowned for the extraordinary density of its tesserae. In this close-detail interpretation, the face becomes the principal subject, allowing expression, modelling and the directional placement of small pieces to be appreciated at a more intimate scale. The Alexander the Great mosaic is especially suited to projects where historical reference is intended to read as a work of decorative art rather than as a repeating field.
