This black white cross mosaic is a faithful copy of a mosaic found at Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily. Split irregular tesserae of Turkish Black marble and Italian white limestone are set with lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals. The intention is to retain the irregularity, rhythm and material character of historic mosaic floors rather than reproduce the pattern as a mechanically uniform tile. Piccola Croce uses small dark four-square cross motifs spaced across a pale field. A narrow dark-and-light perimeter band contains the photographed composition. The restrained scale makes the black white cross mosaic easy to read across a larger surface, while the irregular tesserae and softly varied limestone prevent the monochrome palette from feeling flat.

Repeat Scale and Perimeter Planning

Before specification, review a sample for the spacing of the crosses, limestone tone, black marble contrast and joint character. Set the repeat from the principal room axis and decide whether the field will finish with its narrow perimeter or connect to another border. Pool and warm-climate exterior applications should be reviewed against the substrate, exposure and intended installation system.
