This black white mosaic border frames a faithful copy of a mosaic found at Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily. Split irregular tesserae of Turkish Black marble and Italian white limestone are set with lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals. The approach preserves the slight irregularity that gives historic mosaic floors their movement and surface character. The central field repeats the small dark cross motif of Piccola Croce, but the broader border changes the spatial reading of the floor. In the photographed composition, scrolling and fan-like shapes introduce black, cream and warmer ochre-red notes beside the quieter field. The black white mosaic border therefore creates a stronger perimeter and a clearer distinction between centre and edge.

Set out the central field and border together so the frame remains balanced around the room. Doorways, corners, thresholds and changes of material should be resolved before production, particularly where the ornamental band must turn or terminate.
