As early as the 4th Century BC, Egyptian temples used decorative stone flooring across vast areas, conveying godly power and permanence. Early Christianity continued the tradition, paving basilicas and churches with floors laden with secret symbolism. Landmark buildings have always used stone pavements to impress and to provide a durable surface for the passage of feet.

Through colour and pattern, pavements have also carried messages to those equipped to read them. Egyptian architects, for instance, portrayed mystic energies using geometric black and white stone. We can trace the development of this idea through history: black and white floors became icons of locations as diverse as Europe’s great cathedrals, Flemish merchant houses and Masonic Halls. The meaning behind this and other designs is lost to many, but the aesthetics remain as vigorous as ever.

 

Decorative Stone Flooring Across Four Traditions

De Ferranti approaches decorative stone flooring as a family of surface traditions rather than a single material or pattern. The collection moves from Cocciopesto, a lime and crushed-terracotta surface, to Cosmati compositions in coloured stone and smalti, Geometrics, Patterns & Combinations built through repeat and contrast, and Opus Sectile, where larger shaped elements form inlaid patterns and pictorial work. Together, these collections allow a project to move from restrained fields and borders to highly articulated pavements with strong historical or graphic character.

 

Pattern, Material and Project Specification

A pavement may be organised through field pattern, border, centrepiece, colour contrast or a relationship with adjoining rooms. Because materials, formats, finishes and installation requirements vary across the collection, samples and project review are recommended before specification.
