This Roman black mosaic, Delos, is inspired by the Roman classical era around AD 100 near Siracuse, Sicily. Split irregular tesserae, Turkish Black marble with Italian white limestone and lime mortar form the composition. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals. The aim is fidelity in both appearance and construction, recalling the character of a floor in an important Roman villa or public building. The same studio can apply these ancient techniques to contemporary designs, creating a new/old fusion within the Mediterranean Mosaic Collection.

Roman Black Mosaic in Split Tesserae

Delos is visually dominated by a dark field crossed by pale linear geometry. Close inspection reveals the slight differences in tessera size, edge and surface that animate the black ground. The Roman black mosaic feels graphic from a distance, but tactile and irregular at close range, which is central to its classical character.

Antiqued Finish and Project Layout

The listed finish is antiqued. Before specification, review a sample for the balance of Turkish Black marble, Italian white limestone, joint character and overall tessera scale. Set out the principal lines against room axes, thresholds and adjoining materials so the pattern is not weakened by awkward perimeter cuts. Warm-climate exterior and swimming-pool applications should be reviewed against the specific site and installation build-up.
