Human beings have explored ceramics since earliest times. First out of necessity, to store food and water, and then as an infinite medium for decorative arts. The alchemy of the kiln is part science, part magic. Every time and every culture has had functional requirements from ceramics; from Chinese glazed roof tiles to Dutch tiled stoves and Spanish terracotta floors. The sheer ease with which these objects can be elevated beyond simple artisanal offerings makes ceramics one of the richest categories for artistic experimentation.
Traditional and contemporary ceramics for walls and floors are represented in depth in De Ferranti’s unique collection.
Ceramic Art - Panels, Sculptural Forms and Modules, focuses on the unusual: handpainted cutsom wall panels and art, sculptural tile forms, inventive combinations, and small ceramic modules that behave like micro-architecture on the wall. This is where ceramics move beyond flat planes into relief - concave and convex profiles, fluted and faceted geometries, and surfaces that shift between smooth, tactile, and heavily textured.
The collection draws inspiration from multiple epochs, reinterpreting historical languages through contemporary fabrication. Expect pieces that reference classical ornament, Art Deco geometry, and vernacular craft, alongside modernist and experimental studio work. Finishes range from luminous lustres and high-gloss glazes to matte, dusty, chalk-like surfaces with soft depth and mineral character.
Where appropriate, ceramics are combined with other materials to heighten contrast and detail: metal inlays, stone pairings, semi-precious accents, and true ceramic art compositions that sit somewhere between tile and collectable object. Formats include statement field tiles, mixed-form compositions, and small mosaic-like modules designed to build pattern, shadow, and rhythm across walls and floors.
