Waterjet Mosaics

Waterjet Mosaics

Our waterjet mosaics are luxury mixed material tiles from The Artistic Tile Company that utilise advanced technology to create impressively intricate designs.

Many of these surfaces juxtapose a variety of marbles with either glass or shell and very distinctively utilize a water-jet cutting machine, which with its computer-controlled technology and 60,000 psi cutting head can create curvaceous designs that are so intricate they previously would have been cost-prohibitive. Now the patterns of even the most imaginative and ambitious designer can be brought to life.

Each flowing design has a certain modernity about it, but as many of the patterns cleverly play with historical references all the tiles are firmly rooted in the rich heritage of the decorative arts.

Waterjet Mosaics and the Art of the Curved Line

The particular strength of waterjet mosaics lies in the ability to translate fine arcs, scrolling foliage and interlocking ornament into precisely cut stone and complementary materials. The Horta designs draw directly on the organic line associated with Art Nouveau, while Granada has a more formal damask-like repeat. In both groups, pattern is carried through the relationship between material, finish and line rather than through colour alone.

For comparison with other methods of assembling stone and decorative tesserae, De Ferranti's Mosaics: All Disciplines collection places this computer-controlled cutting technique alongside hand-cut, stone, glass and historic mosaic traditions. The Stone and Marble Mosaics collection is also useful where a project requires quieter fields, borders or related natural-stone surfaces.

Specifying Waterjet Mosaic Surfaces

A waterjet mosaic should be reviewed as a complete repeat rather than as a single sheet. Natural stone variation, polished and honed finishes, grout colour, alignment and transitions to adjoining materials can all change the way the composition reads. Samples and current technical information should therefore be reviewed before specification, particularly where the pattern contains narrow cut elements or contrasting stone and glass.
