Vellum – Smoked Umber Distressed Tile

A smoked umber vellum surface with the quiet depth of aged parchment, stained and distressed into deep brown-grey and near-black tones. Soft clouding, natural mottling and occasional darker blooms create a timeworn character that reads as patina rather than applied pattern. The surface moves between matte and low-sheen as light crosses it.

Vellum, also referred to as parchment, is usually made from goat and calf skin and has been used for more than 1,500 years in maps, manuscripts, bookbinding and writing surfaces. The skin is prepared by cleaning, stretching, scraping and drying under tension rather than conventional leather tanning, helping preserve the smooth translucency and natural markings that distinguish parchment.

Colouring and finishing vellum requires experience. In the 1920s, Jean-Michel Frank, Jacques Adnet and Paul Dupré-Lafon used parchment with oak, bronze and shagreen, while Aldo Tura later became known for coloured goatskin and parchment furniture in Italy.

Smoked Umber Vellum and Distressed Patina

Smoked Umber is supplied as a 30 x 30 cm tile, mounted and wrapped over a wood substrate for stability, crisp edges and easier specification across panelled applications. The dark finish provides a useful counterpoint to the warmer Vellum – Oxblood Brown Patina Tile. De Ferranti’s mica surfaces offer another material associated with restrained twentieth-century interiors, but with mineral shimmer rather than skin translucency.

Dark Surface Planning and Samples

The smoked umber vellum should be reviewed under the intended lighting because its brown, charcoal and black areas respond differently to flat and grazing light. Applications can include furniture cladding, cabinet doors, wall panels, bar fronts, drawer fronts and decorative inlay sections, subject to project-specific suitability. Confirm substrate junctions, seams and edge treatment before fabrication, and use samples to establish the acceptable balance of distressing across larger runs.
