Stone Surfaces with Texture

At De Ferranti, textured stone surfaces are treated as a fine art, and we love nothing more than exploring the surfaces and finishes that natural stone can support. Weaving, braiding, piercing, undulating, bumpy, rugged, rough, smooth, polished, waxy, aged, split-faced and chipped finishes all change the way stone is read and touched.

Stones often differ in hardness, so when assembled pieces are finished by hand through rubbing and polishing, the result can develop a gently undulating texture that a uniform machine process would struggle to reproduce. De Ferranti also combines matt and polished passages, contrasting textures, acids, sandblasting and deliberately irregular workshop treatments. At the subtler end of the spectrum are polishing, honing and our much-used signature Egg Shell finish, which sits between the two.

Textured Stone Surfaces and Hand-Finished Relief

The collection moves from quiet surface treatments to pronounced carving, fluting, pillowing, split faces, stripes, fossil-bearing stone and woven or braided constructions. Relief is especially responsive to lighting: a shallow change in depth may appear restrained in frontal light and much stronger when illuminated obliquely.

Samples, Light and Specification

With textured stone surfaces, a single sample should be read as part of a wider natural range rather than as an absolute colour standard. Review relief depth, edge treatment, finish, veining, tonal movement and direction under the intended project lighting. Floors, wet areas, exterior locations and other demanding applications should be checked for the specific stone, finish, build-up and maintenance regime before specification.
