Woodfired Terracotta

Our woodfired terracotta tiles are shaped by an older kiln process in which the firing atmosphere contributes directly to colour and surface variation. De Ferranti’s collection is fired and stoked in arabesque kilns, producing a range of pale biscuit, ochre, sienna, umber and smoked tones that cannot be reduced to a single standard colour.

Wood firing introduces variation through flame, atmosphere and the movement of ash through the kiln. In ceramic practice these conditions can create flashing, darker tonal development and localised surface effects, which helps explain why a woodfired field reads differently from more controlled gas or electric production. Here that variation is used across squares, diamonds, triangles, hexagons, octagons, herringbone strips and other hand-shaped modules.

Geometric Pavements and Mixed Materials

The collection moves beyond plain field tiles into compositions that combine terracotta with travertine, slate, dark stone and glazed cabochons. Parquet, chevron, herringbone, scallop, petal and small-module patterns allow fired earth to behave almost like marquetry. Because colour range is integral to wood firing, review several current samples or a representative assembled module before specification. Confirm module dimensions, grout, finishing, sealing, substrate and any exterior or wet-area performance for the chosen product. Setting-out is especially important for mixed-material and directional patterns.

Where several colours or materials meet within one module, approve the assembled relationship rather than judging the terracotta, stone and inserts independently.
