This black stone field mosaic is a random assembly of mosaic fragments, hand cut and placed by hand. Simple and eye catching, the design shows a random field mosaic. Each stone is carefully selected, cut and then assembled by hand. The slight indentations in the mosaic field enhance the beauty of this mosaic despite its simplicity. Of particular interest is the irregular nature of the small tesserae, they sing and dance. Although randomly placed, there is much to be said about artistic licence here: no single creation will ever be the same. Only the discerning eye would pick this up, a small detail with maximum impact. As is the case with all the De Ferranti Mosaic collections, we are able to fully customise the materials and colours, and tailor the mosaics to your space, creating unique and personalised pieces.
The palette remains close to black, graphite and charcoal, so the principal variation comes from subtle mineral shifts, tessera edges and the pale joint network. The result is quieter than a multicolour field but still visibly handmade. Field Mosaic – 5469D introduces coloured accents into a similarly dark base, while Field Mosaic – 5469H moves towards deep green and grey-green. The Marble & Onyx Collection is useful when coordinating larger dark stone elements.
For a black stone field mosaic, grout selection has a pronounced effect. A pale joint makes the tessera grid graphic, while a dark joint can create a more continuous field. Review several sheets under project lighting to assess graphite and near-black variation before fixing. On floors, pools and warm-climate exterior areas, confirm substrate preparation, sealing, slip performance and exposure suitability. Perimeter cuts should be planned to preserve the informal hand-cut rhythm rather than creating an overly rigid edge.
