These Pietre Dure Flower Cabochons are De Ferranti’s handcrafted Capolini, or flower-head, inlays, conceived as decorative keystones for floors and walls. The group includes varied botanical motifs in pale lavender, ochre, white, red, orange and green against dark square grounds. They can be used as individual cabochons, repeated accents, or as starting points for borders and pictorial compositions, depending on the project.
Each flower is built from shaped pieces of contrasting stone rather than a printed or painted image. Differences in petal geometry and mineral colour allow the group to move from restrained rosettes to more open, layered blooms. The dark ground gives each motif a clear edge and lets the stone palette remain the principal source of colour. This is consistent with the Florentine commesso approach, where careful selection and fitting of coloured material carries the pictorial work.
The Rosa Pietre Dure Panel offers a more naturalistic rose study, while the Mother of Pearl Rosette Pietre Dure Panel explores a radiating rosette in mother of pearl. For adjacent material ideas, the Shells & Mother of Pearl collection introduces luminous organic surfaces, and the Pavements collection is useful when considering a cabochon within a wider floor scheme.
Pietre Dure Flower Cabochons can punctuate a field, mark intersections or establish a measured rhythm through a border. Before installation, review the chosen motif, orientation, interval and surrounding stone together. A restrained setting can give a single flower more presence, while repeated arrangements require consistent spacing to avoid visual congestion. Natural variation between stone pieces is part of the material character. Confirm the proposed application, substrate and finishing method for project-specific guidance.
