This Pietre Dure Cabochon Mod79 belongs to De Ferranti’s custom series of pietre dure cabochons, or keystones, for floor and wall decoration. At 10 × 10 × 2 cm, the solid sculptural inlay depicts an intricately patterned bird head with pale throat and red eye detail. The series interprets classic British game birds in richly layered stone. De Ferranti is also commissioned for marine forms including sea urchins, octopi and shells, alongside project-specific motifs that may be quietly naturalistic or more boldly stylised. The craft can be adapted to a project’s drawings, stone palette and decorative language rather than treated as a fixed catalogue exercise.
The head is built from closely patterned grey pieces that read almost like shell markings, relieved by a cream throat and small red accent. The visible palette of grey, cream and a small red accent demonstrates how carefully chosen mineral colour can describe feathers, beak and contour without paint.
Within the same series, Cabochons in Pietre Dure (mod78) and Cabochons in Pietre Dure (mod80) provide useful comparisons in silhouette and mineral colour. The Inlay – Intarsio collection broadens the reference towards related cut-stone work, while the Semi-Precious Tile & Slab collection helps position the cabochon within a larger De Ferranti surface or floor scheme.
A Pietre Dure Cabochon Mod79 can operate as a single centre point, repeated accent or part of a larger composition. Review a full-size sample or project drawing before fixing orientation, joint alignment and spacing. In a grouped arrangement, measured intervals help each bird remain legible and allow the surrounding stone to frame the motif. Confirm the proposed substrate, field material and installation method with De Ferranti before specification.
