Scaglie – Polychrome Fish Scale Mosaic

This Roman fish scale mosaic is a faithful copy of a mosaic found at the Domvs Romana, Malta. Split irregular tesserae of Turkish Black marble and Italian white limestone are set with lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals. The emphasis is on both visual fidelity and the hand-worked surface character of classical mosaic. The studio can also apply the same ancient techniques to contemporary designs, extending the Mediterranean Mosaic Collection beyond direct copies while retaining its material and craft logic.

Roman Fish Scale Mosaic and Scalloped Rhythm

Scaglie builds the field from repeated semicircular scales arranged in overlapping rows. Black and pale sections alternate across the photographed composition, with natural stone variation keeping the pattern from becoming optically flat. The Roman fish scale mosaic has a clear directional rhythm, but its curved geometry makes it softer than the collection’s labyrinth, chevron or sawtooth designs.

For a longer and more vertically stretched interpretation of the motif, compare Scaglie Lunghe – Polychrome Fish Scale Mosaic. The pattern can also be considered within De Ferranti’s wider Pavements, Pavimenti & Flooring and Stone & Marble Mosaics collections.

Direction, Repeat and Surface Planning

Decide the direction of the scales in relation to the principal approach to the room, since orientation strongly affects how the repeat reads. Samples should be reviewed for tessera size, tonal range, joint character and the transition between dark and pale scales. Perimeters should be planned to avoid arbitrary half-motifs at prominent edges. Pool and warm-climate exterior use should be confirmed for the specific installation.
