This elongated fish scale mosaic is a faithful copy of a mosaic from the Baths of Caracalla, Rome. Split irregular tesserae of Turkish Black marble and Italian white limestone are set with lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals. The hand-cut tesserae retain the slight variation that gives the surface movement and keeps the classical pattern from reading as mechanically repeated. The studio can also use the same ancient techniques for contemporary designs within the Mediterranean Mosaic Collection.

Elongated Fish Scale Mosaic from a Roman Reference

Scaglie Lunghe stretches the familiar scale into a taller, narrower form. In the photographed composition, elongated black and pale shapes overlap vertically, with warmer ochre accents appearing within the field. Orientation, Edges and Pattern Scale

Establish the direction of the elongated scales before the room is set out, particularly in corridors, entrances or spaces with a dominant sight line. Review a sample for the black, pale and warmer tonal relationships, tessera irregularity and joint character. Plan perimeter cuts so the scale rhythm remains coherent at visible edges.
