This Roman diamond mosaic is a faithful copy of a mosaic found at a Roman villa. Split irregular tesserae of Turkish Black marble and Italian white limestone are set with lime mortar. De Ferranti’s recreations of ancient Roman mosaics are made by hand, using the same materials and tools as the originals, with attention to the irregularity that gives historic floors their particular character. The studio can also use the same ancient techniques to build contemporary designs, extending the vocabulary of the Mediterranean Mosaic Collection beyond direct historical references.

Roman Diamond Mosaic and Concave Geometry

Diamante Concavo is organised as a broad pale field divided into large squares, each carrying a dark concave diamond or star-like outline. A fine dark perimeter band contains the composition. The Roman diamond mosaic therefore reads simultaneously as a repeat and as a sequence of framed units, useful where a room benefits from orderly geometry without a dense all-over pattern.

Scale, Perimeters and Sample Review

Establish the size and number of complete diamond units against the room dimensions before finalising the border position. Samples should be assessed for black-and-white contrast, tessera irregularity and the visual weight of the lime joints. Consider how the perimeter band meets doors, thresholds and adjoining stone. For pools or warm-climate exterior locations, confirm suitability and installation requirements for the specific project.
