Verde Antico
Verde Antico, also known as Verde Antique, Marmor Thessalicum or Thessalian Green, is one of the great rare historic green marbles of the ancient world. Quarried near Larissa in Thessaly, Greece, this dramatic stone is technically a serpentinite and ophicalcite breccia rather than a true metamorphic marble, but it has been prized as a luxury decorative marble since antiquity. Its dark green ground, broken white calcite veining and fragmented mineral structure gave it immense prestige in Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. The ancient Romans quarried Verde Antico for decorative facing, columns and architectural ornament, and it later became one of the defining coloured stones of Byzantine Constantinople. Historic use is recorded in Hagia Sophia, the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, the Church of Hagios Polyeuctus, San Vitale in Ravenna and several churches in Thessaloniki, including Hagios Demetrios and Hagia Sophia.

With its ancient Greek provenance, imperial Roman value and Byzantine sacred associations, Verde Antico is especially suited to luxury interiors, statement panels, bathrooms, bar tops, fireplace surrounds, columns, furniture and decorative slabs where rare marbles, historic provenance and monumental architectural character are essential.
