Verde Antico

Verde Antico marble, also known as Verde Antique, Marmor Thessalicum or Thessalian Green, is one of the great rare historic green stones of the ancient world. Quarried near Larissa in Thessaly, Greece, this dramatic material is technically a serpentinite and ophicalcite breccia rather than a true metamorphic marble, but it has been prized as a decorative marble since antiquity.

Its dark green ground, broken white calcite veining and fragmented mineral structure gave it immense prestige in Roman and Byzantine architecture. The ancient Romans used Verde Antico for decorative facing, columns and ornament, and it later became one of the defining coloured stones of Byzantine Constantinople. Historic use is recorded in Hagia Sophia and other major Byzantine and early Christian buildings.

With its ancient Greek provenance and forceful black-green and pale mineral structure, Verde Antico is especially suited to statement panels, bathrooms, bar tops, fireplace surrounds, columns, floors, furniture and decorative slabs.

Verde Antico Marble and Historic Green Stone

The ancient brecciated structure of Verde Antico marble can be compared with Breccia Verde d’Egitto, whose mixed clasts belong to a very different Egyptian stone tradition, and Verde Eygum, whose pattern is more linear and folded. De Ferranti’s Pietre Dure collection gives further context for the long use of strong green stone in composed decorative work.

Reading the Breccia Before Cutting

The featured material shows dark, almost black green fragments enclosed by pale green and white mineral networks. Review each slab or cut piece for fragment scale before fabrication. Large panels can exploit the contrast between the dark clasts and pale matrix, while smaller elements should be selected carefully so the characteristic brecciated structure remains legible.
