Portoro di Portovenere, also known as Nero Portoro, is one of Italy’s most celebrated rare historic marbles, quarried around Portovenere, Palmaria and the Gulf of La Spezia in Liguria. Admired for its deep black ground and dramatic gold, honey and occasional white veining, it has long been known as the “black gold” of Portovenere.

Although geologically a black limestone, Portoro has been used and traded for centuries as a luxury marble because of its exceptional polish, contrast and decorative authority. Its use reaches back to Roman times, particularly around ancient Luni, before becoming prominent in Genoese, Renaissance and Baroque interiors. Historic references connect the stone with important Italian churches and later grand European decorative schemes.

With its Ligurian provenance and emphatic black-and-gold pattern, Portoro di Portovenere suits statement wall panels, fireplace surrounds, floors, bars, furniture and carefully composed stone features.

Portoro di Portovenere and Dark Marble

The branching gold veins of Portoro di Portovenere create a very different surface from Teos Fire, where burgundy-red flashes cut through a dark Turkish marble, and Grand Antique d’Aubert, whose black and white structure is brecciated rather than linear. Selecting Black and Gold Veining

The featured stone has a dense black field crossed by irregular gold and honey veins, with occasional pale mineral passages. Review each slab before fabrication, especially where corners, fireplace legs or paired panels require continuity. Vein placement can be treated as a principal part of the composition rather than an incidental natural variation.
