Grand Antique marble, also known as Grand Antique d’Aubert, is one of the most prestigious rare historic stones of the French Pyrenees, quarried in the Lez valley near Aubert in Ariège. Celebrated for its forceful contrast of deep black limestone fragments and pure white calcite, this dramatic breccia was known in antiquity and was quarried by the Romans from at least the third century.

The material was exported to Rome and Constantinople and later became important in Byzantine decoration. Grand Antique is famously associated with Hagia Sophia and subsequently appeared in churches, funerary monuments, pietra dura work and major European interiors. Historic examples include Saint-Louis-des-Invalides in Paris and decorative work at Versailles.

Its appearance is unlike conventional black marble with linear white veins. Instead, large pale calcite areas and angular black fragments form a high-contrast geological composition that can read almost like an abstract black-and-white pavement at slab scale.

Planning the Breccia

Slab selection should focus on the size and position of white calcite masses as much as the black ground. For fireplace surrounds, wall panels or furniture, consider how major fragments continue across corners and joints. Full slab review is preferable where the composition itself is intended to become the principal visual feature.
