Hamilton Black limestone, commonly known as Hamilton Black Marble, is a distinctive British fossil stone that has been quarried for centuries. Despite the commercial name, it is not a true marble but a dense black limestone containing visible remains of prehistoric plants and marine organisms, including fossil coral.

The rock dates from the Carboniferous period, approximately 325 million years ago. When cut and polished, the dark ground reveals pale fossil sections, creating an ornate natural pattern that can range from elongated fragments to circular and radiating forms. The live De Ferranti record notes quarrying from the thirteenth century onwards and identifies Durham Cathedral as an important example of British interior columns made from this fossil-bearing stone.

The material is listed for floors, walls, worktops, staircases, bathrooms, basins and other residential or commercial applications, with polished, honed and flamed finishes recorded on the current product page.
