Frescoes & Religious Iconography

De Ferranti specialises in recreating ancient frescoes and religious iconography. Painted using the same plant and mineral extract colours and techniques as the originals, they offer perfect facsimiles.

The work ranges in style from Minoan and Pompeian frescoes to Byzantine iconography. De Ferranti’s authentic recreations offer tantalising glimpses of history. Some of the richest sources of inspiration are the frescoes found during the excavations of Minoan ruins at Akrotiri on the Aegean island of Santorini. These wonderful fragments can be recreated to use as ‘focus’ panels, or translated into complete rooms.

De Ferranti will commission fresco and iconography-inspired work in any decorative style, including modern works for contemporary interiors.

Frescoes and Religious Iconography as Interior Art

For designers, frescoes and religious iconography can work as focal panels, painted doors, overdoor compositions or more immersive room schemes. The category brings together two related traditions: fresco, historically painted into fresh lime plaster, and the icon panel, whose Byzantine lineage commonly combines tempera, gesso, timber and gilded grounds. Scale, colour, patina and placement are central to how each work is read within an interior.

From Akrotiri Wall Painting to Byzantine Icons

Akrotiri is especially important because its Bronze Age wall paintings survive as extensive decorative programmes rather than isolated motifs. Byzantine iconography introduces a different visual discipline, using frontal sacred figures, halos, inscriptions, symbolic colour and gold with great compositional clarity.

Projects seeking a dry, mural-like ceramic surface may also consider De Ferranti’s Fresco Tiles - Matt & Plaster Glazes. The Fayum Portraits Painted on Wood & Stone provide a Roman Egyptian point of comparison for painted portraiture, while Gesso for Wall Panels & Furniture offers another route into layered, painted and gilded decorative surfaces.

Specifying Painted Panels and Fresco Commissions

Because the collection ranges from individual icon panels to doors and broader decorative compositions, final scale, support, edge treatment, fixing method and surrounding finishes should be reviewed for each commission. Samples, artwork references and room elevations are useful when establishing colour, ageing, sightlines and lighting.
