Saint Nicholas

This Saint Nicholas icon is painted in oil and egg on wood with gold leaf and is credited to D. Kolioussis. This detail forms part of De Ferranti’s Iconography Collection. De Ferranti describes the artist as a rare find, able to furnish chapel walls with hand-painted icons and religious themes, create one-off panels for installation art, produce themed rooms, and work from Greek and Roman Orthodox traditions through Renaissance and Classical styles.

Saint Nicholas Icon and Episcopal Imagery

The saint is presented as a bishop against a gold ground, with one hand raised in blessing and the other supporting a richly decorated Gospel book. White episcopal vestments cross a deep burgundy robe, while two small sacred figures appear in the upper field. Saint Nicholas is commonly identified in Eastern Christian iconography through episcopal dress, blessing gesture and Gospel book, giving the composition immediate clarity. The gold leaf and formal frontal pose strengthen its devotional character without requiring an elaborate surrounding frame.

The Christ Pantocrator – Gilded Icon Panel DSC_1582 provides a useful comparison for blessing gesture and Gospel book, while the Four Angels – Offering Panel expands sacred imagery into a multi-figure composition. Byzantine Mosaics offer a related historic language in tesserae, and Gesso for Wall Panels & Furniture is relevant to interiors combining painted, gilded and textured surfaces.

Positioning a Formal Saint Panel

The strong vertical axis suits a niche, narrow wall bay or centred composition where the blessing hand and book remain unobstructed. A relatively neutral surround allows the burgundy, white and gold palette to retain its hierarchy. Lighting should be checked for reflections across the gold leaf while preserving modelling in the face and vestments. For grouped iconography, establish consistent top lines, spacing and eye level before fixing. Final mounting, handling and environmental requirements should be reviewed for the particular panel and project.
