Aggelos Blue

This blue angel icon, Aggelos Blue, is painted in oil and egg on wood, using old doors as the support. The angel detail is credited to D. Kolioussis and belongs to De Ferranti’s Iconography Collection. De Ferranti regards the artist as a rare find, capable of furnishing chapel walls with hand-painted icons and religious themes, producing one-off panels for installation art, creating complete themed rooms, and working in styles from Greek and Roman Orthodox traditions through Renaissance and Classical painting.

Blue Angel Icon on Aged Timber

The figure is presented against a visibly aged timber ground, where deep blue drapery, a luminous halo and pale wings create a strong devotional silhouette. Grain, board joins, wear and tonal changes remain part of the composition rather than being concealed beneath a uniform field. That relationship between sacred image and weathered support gives the work the character of a collected painted object, with saturated blue balanced by warmer brown, gold and muted floral detail.

Within the same collection, Aggelos Smoked Oak offers a quieter brown and gold register, while the Archangel Gabriel Icon Door Panel makes the relationship between devotional painting and reused door-like timber especially explicit. For related surface traditions, Gesso for Wall Panels & Furniture explores layered painted grounds, and the Fayum Portraits Painted on Wood & Stone provide another historical route into portrait painting on rigid supports.

Placing Aggelos Blue in an Interior

Aggelos Blue is best treated as an artwork rather than background decoration. Review it against the intended wall colour, adjacent timber and lighting before fixing positions are agreed. Side or grazing light can strengthen the texture of the old doors and painted surface, while harsh frontal lighting may flatten the relationship between paint, halo and support. Final fixing, edge treatment and environmental conditions should be reviewed for the project.
