The Giovanni blue terracotta tile is hand-painted in a Southern Italian artisan studio with very ornate floral and geometric decoration in layered blue tones over an off-white ground. De Ferranti records the design as Sicilian in origin and 18th century in character. Four tiles join to complete the larger repeat, giving the surface a balanced medallion-like structure.

The design combines scrolling foliage, fine linear detail and radial order. Blue varies naturally with brush pressure and firing, while the open ground keeps the intricate pattern legible. The handmade terracotta body brings warmth beneath the glaze, and slight differences between tiles prevent the installation from reading as mechanically reproduced.
