Delft Tile – White – Blue

The cool white Delft tile presents traditional Delft character through the classic white tin glaze that became synonymous with Dutch ceramic production from the 17th century onwards.

This is the unmistakable ground upon which cobalt landscapes, ships, florals and biblical scenes were painted. The surface reads as a soft chalky white with a faint blue cast – never stark, never clinical.

Under certain light it carries a subtle grey-blue whisper within the glaze, giving it depth and historical authenticity. Small specks, pinholes and delicate surface variation reflect true hand-crafted production. This is the base tile that defined Delftware – the quiet stage for cobalt decoration – yet it stands beautifully on its own in restrained schemes.

Colour: Cool chalk white with a faint blue undertone.

Finish: Traditional tin glaze with gentle luminosity.

Format: Traditionally 13 x 13 cm.

A foundational tile in the Delft tradition – understated, historic and endlessly versatile.

Cool White Delft Tile as a Field Surface

Without painted ornament, the glaze colour and subtle surface differences become the defining visual elements. The pale blue cast keeps the white from appearing flat, while small variations between tiles introduce gentle movement across the field.

Across a broader installation, the cool white Delft tile can create a restrained background for stronger materials, frame decorated ceramics or form a quiet monochrome wall. Samples should be reviewed together because natural differences in tone, pinholes and glaze density will influence the finished composition.

Related Delft and Blue-White Tiles

Within the same category, Delft Tile – White – Yellow offers a warmer ivory field with a buttery undertone. Archer Tile – Polychrome Delft demonstrates how a pale tin-glazed ground can support figurative cobalt decoration with additional muted colours.

Elsewhere in De Ferranti’s ceramic collections, Serafina Blue and White Handpainted Terracotta Tile explores blue decoration over an off-white background. Sintra Collection – Blue Sponged Mottled Tile provides a Portuguese counterpart with a softly mottled blue surface.

Specification and Surface Planning

When specifying the cool white Delft tile, the traditional 13 x 13 cm format should be confirmed for the current supply. Samples should be assessed under the project lighting and beside adjoining stones, timbers, metals, painted finishes and decorated tiles.

The intended substrate, grout colour, installation products, cleaning requirements and suitability for the proposed application should be confirmed before ordering.
