The Elisabella blue terracotta tile is hand-painted in a Southern Italian artisan studio with a naïve decoration in several blue tones over an off-white ground. De Ferranti identifies the pattern as Sicilian in origin and 17th century in character. Four tiles join to complete the repeat, while the delicately aged background and terracotta body give the composition a softened, established appearance.

Its appeal lies in the contrast between a clearly structured repeat and the informal character of the drawing. The shades of blue vary gently within the handpainted motif, bringing depth without requiring a broad polychrome palette. The pattern should be laid out as complete four-tile units so that its larger motif remains legible. A sample panel will help establish grout width and confirm how the aged off-white ground sits beside plaster, pale stone, timber, brass or other surrounding finishes.
