Our painted terracotta tiles bring colour and pattern directly onto fired clay, allowing the material itself to become the decorative language of a floor or wall. The Painted Clay Series includes hand-painted and stencilled approaches, from restrained repeats and borders to more expressive fields, all retaining the warmth and slight variation of the terracotta ground.
Two approaches give designers different surface effects. Natural pigments can be painted or stencilled onto the clay for a softer, chalkier and more timeworn appearance. Alternatively, decoration can be applied in glaze and fired, producing a colour-fast surface with greater depth and lustre. In both cases, the value lies in visible handwork: small changes in brushmark, pigment, glaze and clay tone keep a repeating pattern from reading as mechanically printed.
Painted clay can be used as a continuous repeat, a framed panel, a border or a carpet-like centre within a quieter terracotta field. The wider Terracotta Floors & Walls category provides natural, waxed and woodfired counterparts, while Ceramics by Neisha Crosland offers a broader study of hand-painted terracotta pattern. Stencilled, Painted Stone & Marble is also useful where the project is comparing how applied colour behaves on different mineral surfaces.
Before ordering, resolve the repeat, orientation, border relationship and intended grout with current samples. Confirm the selected painting or glazing method, floor or wall suitability, sealing requirements and any wet-area or exterior performance for the specific installation.
For larger patterned areas, a repeat drawing or small mock-up is useful for testing scale before manufacture and for preventing awkward motif cuts at important edges.
