This lion hunt mosaic is composed of micro pebbles that are cut, shaped, polished and assembled by hand. The original is housed at Pella in Macedonia, Greece. The technique is known as Opus Lapilli, a mosaic method based on small pebbles. The ancient Lion Hunt mosaic dates to approximately 330-300 BC, in the Early Hellenistic period. De Ferranti’s interpretation forms part of the Pebble Collection.

History of the Lion Hunt Mosaic

The Pella composition belongs to an important moment in Greek pebble mosaic, when carefully selected coloured stones were used for increasingly complex figurative scenes. The original Lion Hunt depicts hunters engaging a lion, while the De Ferranti gallery detail focuses attention on the close arrangement of ochre, cream and dark pebbles. Rather than treating the historic reference as a printed image, the lion hunt mosaic depends on the physical selection and shaping of individual pieces to build contour, tone and figure.
