Pebble Mosaics

Other exquisite examples of pebble mosaics have been excavated at Olynthos in Northern Greece, dating from the later 5th and early 4th centuries BC, while later Macedonian examples at Pella use coloured pebbles for figurative scenes including a lion hunt. The tradition has carried on right through to the current day, in both figurative and geometric forms.

De Ferranti’s pebble mosaics are made in exactly the same way as 5,000 years ago. Each of the pebbles is hand selected and put into the required arrangement one by one.

Pebble Mosaics from Antiquity to the Present

Working pebble by pebble allows a surface to move between disciplined geometry and freer pictorial composition. Rounded forms create a distinctive rhythm at close range, while colour contrast, orientation and spacing can establish borders, fields, figures or repeating motifs across a larger floor or wall. The result is a mosaic language defined as much by placement and texture as by the individual material.

Stone, Glass and Metal Pebble Surfaces

The De Ferranti collection brings several material approaches together. Stone Pebble Mosaics explore natural tonal variation, polished micro-pebbles and hand-laid figurative or geometric schemes. Specifying Hand-Laid Mosaic Surfaces

For specification, consider the scale of the pebble, pattern repeat, tonal variation, grout colour, edge conditions and how the layout meets adjoining materials. Samples and layout review are particularly useful where a project depends on precise colour relationships or a continuous patterned field. Suitability for flooring, wet areas or exterior settings should always be confirmed against the individual product, finish and installation method rather than assumed across the whole collection.
