Nodo e Svastica 1 Mosaic

This Roman geometric mosaic pavement is a beautiful rendition of an old Roman mosaic pavement, with each stone carefully selected, cut and assembled by hand. The slight indentations in the mosaic field enhance the beauty of the work despite its apparent simplicity. Black lines seem to stand over the handcrafted background field, while the randomness of the small tesserae accentuates its character. As with De Ferranti’s wider mosaic collection, materials and colours can be adapted to suit the project and space.

Roman Geometric Mosaic Pavement and Interlocking Linework

The design is organised around a continuous dark meander that turns through right angles and interlocking knot-like forms. Against the lighter field, the line becomes the principal structure, while the less regular background tesserae prevent the pattern from reading like a printed graphic. Nodo e Svastica 2 Distressed Mosaic offers the closely related aged interpretation. Otho Mosaic Border uses a more compartmentalised Roman-inspired diamond rhythm for framing a floor. The broader Pavements, Pavimenti & Flooring collection provides further context for decorative stone floors.

Setting Out a Continuous Roman Pattern

A Roman geometric mosaic pavement depends on continuity. Establish the pattern centre lines and room perimeter before fixing so major turns and interlocking sections remain balanced at thresholds and wall edges. Where the design meets another field or border, resolve the junction on drawings rather than allowing the final repeat to be cut arbitrarily on site. Review grout beside both the dark linework and pale background tesserae. For flooring, swimming pools or warm-climate exterior settings, confirm substrate preparation, sealing, slip performance and exposure suitability for the selected stone and finish.
