Signature Art Series

De Ferranti's painted marble panels bring fine artwork directly onto stone, continuing the much older idea of treating marble as a carrier of colour and image rather than assuming it must remain monochrome. Greek and Roman sculpture and architectural decoration were frequently polychromed, and the material's capacity to hold colour has a substantial historical precedent.

In the Signature Art Series, exceptionally thin marble is used so that the stone can become softly translucent. Delicate painted linework and restrained washes remain visible in ordinary ambient light, while suitable project conditions may allow carefully considered backlighting to introduce a subtle internal luminosity. Any lighting build-up, support and final panel construction should be reviewed for the specific installation.

Painted Marble Panels With Figurative Detail

The collection currently contains two figurative works. Officer and the Nude combines warm flesh tones, fine dark linework and muted green drapery. Reclining Woman in Blue Dress is quieter, with a pale blue-grey gown and restrained interior detail. Both rely on the meeting of image and mineral surface: the veining and translucency of marble remain part of the finished work rather than being hidden beneath an opaque painted ground.

Lighting and Framing Translucent Stone Art

Framing, backing, fixing and light source should be resolved together. A sample or mock-up can establish how much light is desirable and whether the artwork should read primarily as a painted stone panel or as an illuminated feature.
