Sail

Sail is a herringbone stencilled limestone design that reworks one of the most familiar patterns in wood and marble flooring. Rima Patel wanted the motif to retain a hand-drawn quality, so the repeat carries the mark of drawing rather than the rigid precision of a mechanically plotted herringbone.

That slight informality is important to the Haus Series, where pattern is intended to feel softened by time and to flow over the stone as a continuous decorative field.

Herringbone Stencilled Limestone With a Hand-Drawn Mark

Sail does not attempt to imitate separate timber blocks or cut stone strips. Instead, it uses the graphic idea of herringbone as surface pattern, allowing the limestone beneath to remain a single material field. This distinguishes it from Parquet on stencilled stone, which borrows another traditional flooring language, and from Froswick on stencilled stone, whose geometry derives from a 1920s rug. Sail is especially effective where a project wants directional movement but a softer, more drawn character than conventional parquet.

Choosing the Direction of Sail

The direction of herringbone stencilled limestone should be resolved early because it can change how a room feels. Running the dominant movement along the long axis may reinforce length, while turning it can visually broaden a narrower space. At thresholds, decide whether the pattern continues, changes direction or stops against a plain stone field. On walls, test how the diagonal lines meet corners and cabinetry. Representative samples should be reviewed for both pigment and natural stone variation. The Rima & McRae – Haus Series page provides comparison with less directional patterns.
