Aboriginal-Inspired Dot Painted Stone

De Ferranti's dot painted stone collection draws visual inspiration from the rhythmic mark-making associated with Australian Aboriginal painting, translating repeated dots, circles and linear movement onto natural stone. Pigment interacts with the mineral surface rather than sitting like a flat print, giving the decoration depth, variation and a close relationship with the substrate.

The modern Western Desert painting movement emerged at Papunya in the early 1970s, while the cultural systems, relationships to Country and ceremonial knowledge informing many artists are far older. De Ferranti's collection should therefore be read as a contemporary decorative response to a visual language, not as a reproduction of Indigenous sacred narratives or specific cultural meanings.

Dot Painted Stone as Pattern and Mineral Surface

The three works take different directions. Desert Rhythm builds movement through concentric circles and flowing bands in warm mineral colours. Red Ochre Dotwork Painted Stone is denser and more pictorial, with white constellations of dots against an ochre-led field. Midnight Kilim Patchwork Panel moves towards a dark textile-like matrix of small rectangular passages. Their shared strength is the dialogue between hand-applied pattern and the irregular character of stone.
