This chairo shell mosaic is a handmade brown shell surface whose varied amber, burgundy, black and honey tones can recall the visual depth of historic tortoiseshell without using that prohibited material. Finely cut and shaped shell is set onto mesh for installation, allowing the small square pieces to form a regular field while retaining strong natural colour variation.
Each shell tessera is available in 10 mm or 15 mm squares. In the featured mosaic, individual pieces shift from near-black and deep wine to warm orange, ochre and translucent brown, producing a patchwork effect rather than a single preset shade. The compact format makes the material suitable for continuous fields as well as narrow decorative bands. Existing commissions include walls, vanity-unit doors and tabletops, and De Ferranti has also recommended shell as borders, dados or accent tiles where a smaller quantity is appropriate.
For a fractured interpretation of the same colour family, see Cracklé Brown Chairo Shell. The Brown Lip Mother of Pearl Mosaic is lighter and more restrained, while Brown Lip Hinge – No Grout uses elongated shell slices instead of square tesserae. The wider Shells & Mother of Pearl collection includes further brown, black and iridescent shell options.
A chairo shell mosaic should be sampled for colour distribution because its appeal depends on variation across the sheet. The 10 mm format creates finer visual movement, while 15 mm squares allow individual shell markings to read more clearly. Recorded applications include walls, bar tops, bathrooms, columns, tabletops and swimming pools. Confirm backing, fixing method, grout or joint treatment and suitability for the exact setting before ordering.
