This brown lip shell panel is composed of longitudinally cut clam-shell hinges, tightly set without visible grout to create a continuous vertical rhythm. The natural curvature of each slice produces a layered shimmer, moving through warm beige, taupe and pearlescent flashes rather than forming a flat brown field.
Each shell hinge is chemically cleaned, cut lengthwise and inlaid onto a stable substrate using specialist adhesives. Removing an obvious grout line allows the narrow pieces to read almost like stacked reeds or aged brickwork turned on end, while the irregular shell edges keep the surface tactile and natural. Tonal variation and small irregularities are inherent to the material. Available sizes are listed from 10 x 10 cm up to 100 x 100 cm, with tiles at 16 mm and wall panels from 16 to 19 mm.
The Brown Lip Mother of Pearl Mosaic offers a more regular brick-format interpretation of related warm shell tones. For a darker comparison, the Black Lip Mother of Pearl Mosaic shifts towards charcoal and olive. De Ferranti’s Inlay – Intarsio collection is also useful when considering shell as a veneer or decorative insert rather than as a conventional tiled field.
Specified applications include wall cladding, mirror frames, furniture accents and decorative tiles. On larger areas, review the direction of the vertical slices and the meeting points between panels before manufacture. The groutless appearance makes edge alignment particularly important at corners, recesses and joinery junctions. Representative samples should be viewed under directional and ambient light, since the shell can move from quiet taupe to brighter pearl depending on angle.
