This Abulón shell mosaic is an elegant iridescent surface, often confused with New Zealand Paua shell. Completely handmade, the finely cut and shaped shell is carefully set on mesh for ease of installation, creating a dense field in which every small tessera carries a different band, flash or colour shift.

Abulón Shell Mosaic in 10 mm Tesserae

Each shell tessera is 10 mm square. The small scale makes the mosaic read as a continuous material from a distance, while close viewing reveals deep brown, petrol green, blue, silver and pearly markings across the individual pieces. The mesh backing supports a regular layout without suppressing the natural variation that gives Abulón its character. Commissions have included walls, vanity unit doors and tabletops, and the material can also be used more selectively for borders, dados or accent tiles where only a narrow band of shell is required.

Sampling and Layout

An Abulón shell mosaic should be sampled in the actual lighting conditions because the apparent colour changes markedly with viewing angle. The 10 mm grid can feel ordered and almost textile-like, but the nacre remains visually active. For larger areas, review sheet joins and overall colour distribution before installation. For furniture, panels or curved detailing, confirm the substrate, backing and edge treatment so the mesh-mounted shell is appropriate for the proposed construction.
