This Relief Pietre Dure Panel is De Ferranti’s Still Life composition, made from polished semi-precious and hardstones applied in relief rather than set entirely flush. Fruit, leaves and a vessel are built up sculpturally, allowing colour, translucency and polish to stand proud of the background. Purple, red, green and pale mineral tones give the composition the painterly richness associated with pietre dure while introducing a distinctly tactile surface.
The panel reinterprets the Florentine inlay tradition by shaping, polishing and applying stone elements to create subtle three-dimensional depth. Materials such as agate, amethyst, jasper and lapis can contribute markedly different colour and translucency. As light crosses the raised surfaces, highlights shift between individual fruits, leaves and vessel details, reinforcing both natural variation and the physical construction of the work.
The Kingfisher Pietre Dure Panel provides a flush pictorial comparison through its kingfisher subject, while the Rosa Pietre Dure Panel uses restrained botanical inlay on a pale ground. Objects of Desire & Curiosities offers context for sculptural and collectible material pieces, and the Semi-Precious Tile & Slab collection is useful for comparing the mineral colours used across hardstone work.
A Relief Pietre Dure Panel should be planned with its projection and lighting in mind. The raised construction creates shadow as well as colour, so a grazing or directional light can change how the composition is read. Because the surface is not simply a flat inlay, fixing, framing and protection should be resolved for the intended location. Review dimensions, surrounding material and access for installation before confirming the piece.
