Verdemarina Intarsiato

This Verdemarina intarsiato pavement combines De Ferranti’s signature sage stone with carefully selected leathery terracotta in an opus sectile floor. The restrained two-material palette lets the cut geometry and tonal contrast carry the design, with the green-grey stone set against the warmer cotto. The composition is inspired by a floor at Ostia, the harbour city of ancient Rome, and forms part of De Ferranti’s Pavimenti Collection.

Verdemarina Intarsiato Pavement in Detail

Verdemarina Intarsiato uses the essential opus sectile principle of shaping larger pieces to fit the geometry of the composition. The method allows each stone, marble or terracotta element to carry more visual weight than a small mosaic tessera. Natural markings can therefore become part of the pattern, especially where the pieces are large enough for veining and colour shifts to remain visible.

The method is well suited to framed panels and pavements because the outer border can establish a clear visual boundary around a complex centre. Where the design meets plain field stone, the transition should be drawn and dimensioned so that the final work reads as intentional rather than simply inserted.

For related material and pattern studies, compare Volcanicus Fiorellino and Verdemarina Cotto & Crescent Border. The wider Opus Sectile – Roman-Inspired Stone Marquetry for Walls & Floors places this design within a broader group of pavements and specialist surface techniques, which can help when coordinating borders, adjacent rooms or a larger material schedule.

Material Variation and Installation

The recorded applications include flooring, wall applications, bathrooms, tabletops and restaurants. For the Verdemarina intarsiato pavement, review the composition as a complete drawing or sample so that the larger shaped pieces align correctly with borders and surrounding surfaces. Where wet, exterior or high-use settings are proposed, the selected stone, backing, finish and fixing method should be assessed for that project before specification.
