Verdemarina Cotto & Crescent Border

This Verdemarina crescent pavement combines rhomboid sage stone and carefully selected leathery terracotta with a connecting crescent border in sage stone. The broader directional border gives the field a stronger frame and reinforces the relationship between the green-grey stone and warm cotto. The composition is inspired by a floor at Ostia, the harbour city of ancient Rome, and forms part of De Ferranti’s Pavimenti Collection.

Verdemarina Crescent Pavement in Detail

Verdemarina Cotto & Crescent Border uses opus sectile as a linear decorative device. Shaped stone elements allow the motif to flow along the border without being reduced to a square grid, while the surrounding field can remain comparatively quiet. Border width, repeat length and junctions at corners should be established from drawings before fabrication.

Large shaped pieces make stone selection especially important. A veined marble may create movement inside one element, while a quieter limestone can provide visual rest around it. The relationship between these materials should be judged across the complete composition, not by approving each stone in isolation.

Related options include Verdemarina Intarsiato and Verdemarina Cotto & Border, each exploring a different balance of material and geometry. The wider Opus Sectile – Roman-Inspired Stone Marquetry for Walls & Floors provides additional context for specifying this design as part of a coordinated scheme of floors, wall surfaces or framed decorative elements.

Pattern Scale and Project Review

The recorded applications include flooring, wall applications, bathrooms, kitchens and tabletops. For the Verdemarina crescent pavement, review the composition as a complete drawing or sample so that the larger shaped pieces align correctly with borders and surrounding surfaces. Where wet, exterior or high-use settings are proposed, the selected stone, backing, finish and fixing method should be assessed for that project before specification.
