Neisha Crosland
Rosa di Spine

This rose opus sectile presents a thorny rose bush that appears to meander across an aged white ground. Red terracotta forms the roses, black-green limestone defines the thorns, and De Ferranti’s old-looking white limestone provides the background. The composition uses opus sectile as stone marquetry, a technique associated with luxury Roman pavements in which shaped pieces are fitted to form the design. It forms part of De Ferranti’s Pavimenti Collection.

Rose Opus Sectile in Detail

Rosa di Spine demonstrates the pictorial possibilities of opus sectile, where larger shaped pieces are cut to describe petals, leaves, stems or framing elements. Unlike a conventional tessellated mosaic, the outline of each stone follows the design itself. This allows veining, translucency and colour variation to become part of the image rather than simply background texture.

Opus sectile has a different visual logic from tessellated mosaic. Because the pieces are shaped for the motif, a single element may describe an entire petal, feather, leaf or geometric facet. The technique therefore sits close to stone marquetry, with drawing, material choice and cutting accuracy all contributing directly to the composition.

Compare Sage Opus Sectile Pavement and Porta Marina for related approaches to material and geometry. The wider Opus Sectile – Roman-Inspired Stone Marquetry for Walls & Floors provides additional context for coordinating this design with borders, field pavements and adjacent surfaces.

Layout, Samples and Specification

The recorded applications include flooring, wall applications, bathrooms, kitchens and fireplace surrounds. For the rose opus sectile, review the composition as a complete drawing or sample so that the larger shaped pieces align correctly with borders and surrounding surfaces. Where wet, exterior or high-use settings are proposed, the selected stone, backing, finish and fixing method should be assessed for that project before specification.
