This gemstone micromosaic basin is carved from solid white marble and inlaid across the bowl with white serpentine, amethyst and red agate. Its calm pale outer form gives way to an intricate interior surface of tiny stone pieces, combining a functional basin with the close-worked character of a collectible hardstone object.
White serpentine establishes the pale ground and geometry, while purple amethyst forms scrolling lines, small diamonds and points of contrast. Warm red agate introduces further accents within the pattern. Seen from above, the composition reads almost like a miniature pavement, with repeated scrollwork and small figurative details arranged around the bowl. The closer gallery view makes the scale of the individual tesserae and the precision of the inlay easier to appreciate.
The technique connects naturally with De Ferranti’s Pietre Dure collection and the wider semi-precious stone collection. For another mineral-led basin, the Rock Crystal Basin relies on the translucency and natural inclusions of a single material rather than patterned inlay.
The gemstone micromosaic basin is made to order, with stone selection, colour balance and pattern density adjustable to suit the project. Because the composition depends on natural stones as well as detailed inlay, the overall palette should be reviewed with nearby marble, metalware and joinery. Project discussions can also address the visual relationship between the micromosaic interior and the quieter white marble rim. The intricate interior is best read where the basin remains visually open, allowing both the overall repeat and the scale of the individual stone pieces to register.
